• 'news is anything timely that interests a number of people, and the best news is that which has the greatest interest for the greatest number'

REAL NEWS

• real news refers to information that is accurate, factual, and presented with integrity. it typically comes from credible sources that adhere to established journalistic standards. here are examples of significant real news stories from Sri Lanka, reflecting important events and issues relevant to the country;

1.ECONOMIC CRISIS AND IMF SUPPORT (2022-2023)

❤ Sri Lanka faced a severe economic crisis beginning in 2022, characterized by food shortages, fuel shortages, and skyrocketing inflation. the country defaulted on its debt for the first time in its history, leading to immense public discontent and protests against the government. in the face of this crisis, the Sri Lankan government sought assistance from the international monetary fund (IMF). in early 2023, an agreement was reached for a bailout package, which included measures aimed at stabilizing the economy and implementing reforms. this deal was crucial for helping the country manage its fiscal challenges and restore confidence among international lenders.

2.POLITICAL UNREST AND LEADERSHIP CHANGE(2022)

FAKE NEWS 

• 'fake news' refers to deliberately false or misleading information presented as news, it is often created to manipulate public opinion, discredit individuals, or generate financial gain through advertising revenue by driving traffic to certain websites.
• the rise of the internet and social media has facilitated the rapid spread of fake news, as individuals can share information widely and with little verification.news organizations and social platforms are also currently taking steps to identify fake news and limit its spread.
• below are some examples of fake news;

1.COVID-19 MISINFORMATION

❤ during the COVID-19 pandemic, various false claims circulated regarding the virus's origin, transmission, and cure.misinformation included unfounded claims about specific foods or traditional remedies being effective against the virus, leading to public confusion and potential health risks.

2.CRISIS EVENTS

❤ during periods of social unrest or protests, rumors and fake news about violence, police actions, or government responses often spread rapidly. for instance, exaggerated reports about clashes or injuries can escalate tensions and provoke unwarranted fear or anger within communities.

3.FAKE CRICKET NEWS

❤ example of fake cricket news that circulated in Sri Lanka involved false reports about a prominent sri lankan cricketer announcing their retirement from international cricket.the news claimed that the player had made this announcement during a press conference, which never actually took place.such reports often cause confusion among fans and can generate unnecessary concern to verify information through credible sources before believing or sharing news related to sports or any other topic.
